Chiura Obata was born in 1885 in Sendai, Japan. Trained as an ink painter, he came to California in 1903 and worked as an illustrator and commercial designer. Obata returned to Japan during 1928-1932 and transformed his California paintings into woodblock prints that resembled watercolors. After his return to California he obtained a position as an art instructor at the University of California, Berkeley. Stephen Coburn Pepper was born in 1891, the son of well-known portrait painter Charles Hovey Pepper, and the grandson of a distinguished President of Colby College. Worth Allen Ryder was born on November 10, 1884 in Kirkwood, New York. His childhood was spent in Berkeley, California. He entered UC Berkeley in 1903 and studied for three years before turning to art and studying at the Art Students League in New York, earning at B.F.A. in 1908.
